September is Hunger Action Month

September is Hunger Action Month!  Join AAFB, Feeding America, our member food banks, and anti-hunger friends and advocates from around the country to take action raising awareness and fighting hunger!  Many more events are still forthcoming, but here is a sample of what you can expect:
  • Feeding America has launched their Hunger Action Month site filled with ideas, including quick links to send advocacy messages to your elected representatives and to take a pledge to end hunger.
  • Wear orange for Go Orange Day on Thursday, September 4 and share pictures on social media! In addition, be sure to change your Facebook and Twitter profile photos orange during the month of September!  Post photos of you wearing orange and share them with us on Facebook and Twitter.  You'll be joined by Governor Brewer, Senators McCain and Flake, many of Arizona's House Representatives, Mayor Stanton, and the entire Phoenix City Council!
  • Check out the Chase Tower in downtown Phoenix - Arizona's tallest building - which will glow orange starting during the evening of Go Orange Day and then every Thursday evening for the entire month!
  • 3TV has joined forces with Albertsons, Bashas', Food City and Safeway for the Battle Against Childhood Hunger campaign, running September 2-30. Help combat child hunger by making a cash donation at the point-of-sale or by purchasing “Grab N’ Go” pre-packaged bags to benefit child hunger programs!

  • Learn what it's like to eat on a SNAP (Food Stamp) budget by participating in a SNAP Challenge!  This year, the challenge is happening October 6-13.  During that week, limit your total food purchases to the weekly budget of a typical SNAP recipient, which is just $29!
    Registration information coming soon!

  • Although it came out in 2013, this film is as relevant and moving as ever.  Make plans to sit down with your family and watch the documentary film on hunger, A Place at the Table, available on DVD, Blu-Ray and many streaming services.  In Phoenix, the Franciscan Renewal Center is hosting a screening and discussion session as part of their Movie Night at the Casa on the evening of Friday, September 12.  Here's the flyer (PDF).
