Arizona Centennial: A New Motto for Arizona
On our Centennial, a new motto for Arizona…
Last week my grandson, all of 4 and half months old sprouted his first tooth. What rejoicing at this milestone for one so young! And today as I’ve been thinking about Arizona’s next hundred years, and looking at his wonderful picture on my computer – thinking what life will hold for him, I’ve been thinking Arizona needs a new motto – The Love State.
I know that Valentine’s Day was to some extent a happen-stance when it became Arizona’s official Statehood Day, but now 100 years later, I’m thinking it may have been prophetic. What if Arizona became “The Love State”?
It seems, if that were the case, we could maybe link the majestic beauty of our state with actions that could help us erase the reputation we’ve gained over the last several years as not being friendly, as not wanting our neighbors to stay around, as gun-toting, as not education oriented, as making it as difficult as possible to find help when you need it, and as not the best place to settle and raise children.
If we were “The Love State”, maybe we could focus on matching the majesty with how we treat each other, how we shape and mold the support we offer each other, how we look out for each other, and what we do to make this truly the most beautiful place on the planet. And maybe, just maybe I wouldn’t have to do the job that engages me each and every day, on weekends and sometimes in the middle of the night - helping Arizonans understand there are hungry children, men and women, vulnerable people in our state that need food to survive.
Give it a try, you just might find it would work.
